Irish synth maestro Circuit3 explores the retro-moderne on sanguine ‘Future Radio’ single

We admit that we’ve paid a bit more attention to Ireland this past year than ever previously before, but there certainly is good reason for that with so much great music coming out of The Emerald Isle these days, harking back to the emergence of such bands as Fontaines DC and well before. Fast forward to May 2022 as we now encounter a Dublin-based electronic artist performing under the moniker Circuit3 . What a delight we have to present to you today, especially if you are a fan of Erasure, OMD, Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby or New Order.

Having just signed with Manchester-based electronic music label AnalogueTrash to release the album ‘Technology For The Youth’, we are not at all surprised to learn that lead single ‘Future Radio’ involved some heavy hitters in the music industry, including Wolfgang Flür (Kraftwerk) collaborator iEuropean (Sean Barron), who co-produced the track. The album as a whole was also mastered at WAV Mastering by Richard Dowling, known for his work with Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, Motorhead, David Bowie, Foo Fighters, New Order and Sparks.

‘Future Radio’ immerses us into some awesome keyboard wave in a wonderfully youthful sound that lifts your spirits. Based on quintessential pop chords, Circuit3 (the alias of soundcrafter Peter Fitzpatrick) navigates into the future via the past throughout the forthcoming album with lyrics that are informed by that era of telecommunications and space exploration pre-dating the first Space Shuttle’s departure from Cape Canaveral.

Truly retro-futuristic, Circuit3 uses analogue synthesizers as a vehicle for lyrical storytelling, creating music that is heavily influenced by the classic era of electronic pop and which is rooted in the era before digital synthesis. A childhood fascination with space provides the emotional narrative arc for ‘Technology For The Youth’, a collection of crisp electronic pop songs and atmospheric instrumentals created with an enviable array of analogue synthesizers.

“Every Circuit3 album features a track co-written with Brian McCloskey, better known to many as the curator of the magnificent Smash Hits magazine archive ‘Like Punk Never Happened’. From California, he sent me lyrics for ‘Future Radio’, which captured my childhood love of pirate radio stations popped into a blender with the space race. Starting out as an homage to The Buggles, it becomes a boy’s adventure tale, drifting off to sleep to the sound of pirate radio signals ebbing and flowing into my dreams,” says Peter Fitzpatrick.

Circuit3 debuted with the ‘siliconchipsuperstar’ LP (2018), followed by the album ‘The Price Of Nothing & The Value Of Everything’ (2019), praised by no less than Martyn Ware (The Human League, Heaven17). More recently, Circuit3 also released a remix created of Rodney Cromwell ‘Opus Three’.

For Fitzpatrick, this was the album he always hoped he would make and one that he has poured his entire heart and soul into. ‘Technology For The Youth’ is electronic pop constructed from the brave ambitions of forward-thinking scientists and politicians, and the remembered hopes, dreams and fascinations of a young Dublin boy.

As of May 4, ‘Future Radio’ will be available across online stores, including Spotify and Apple Music, as well as via Bandcamp.
