There are a lot of great singers out there and there are a lot of fantastic songwriters, talented musicians and excellent music producers. It takes a winning combination of all of these factors to leave a lasting impression and that is exactly what has been done by Irish songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Cat Dowling, who has released two superb singles this year – ‘Trouble’ came out in the spring and ‘Freedom’ is the latest. We are not ready to move on just yet and are pleased to present a video created in support of this latter release. This is absolutely superb!
One of the most unique vocalists in Ireland today, Cat Dowling’s beautifully dark pop songs and achingly intimate vocals will grip you from the outset. Downling also has a diverse background in music, having fronted Babelfish and later Alphastates. In 2013, Dowling debuted with ‘The Believer’ LP, ranked in numerous ‘Best of Year’ music polls, including The Sunday Times with subsequent placements in the second series of ‘Banshee’, the ‘Witches of East End’ TV series, as well as ‘My Name is Emily’. Cat has also lent vocals on numerous other projects, including for ABC’s ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ with Emmy-winning actress Viola Davis.
Created by film-maker Alba Lahoz, the new video features three free-spirited children (Cat’s own kids) enjoying the beach, symbolic of the joy in embracing space and social contact and enjoying every minute.
Cat Dowling explains:
“Sometimes we think big. Sometimes we think small. Sometimes we think with all we have got. When we have limited access to other humans, the humans closest to us are the most important humans of all. This video was filmed on a bitingly-cold December afternoon when light was sparse, winds howled and the skies randomly opened. We managed to find the sun, fell in love with the wind and forgot about the camera. It was mainly filmed on Donabate beach and Dollymount Strand in Dublin. Freedom is best explained and expressed in childhood when there are no limitations, everything is possible and we are free to be truly ourselves”.
Dowling also has another BIG announcement to make this week – she is the latest artist to sign on with Cork-based label(and champion of many great artists) Forever In Financial Arrears Records (a,k.a. FIFA Records). As a result, we can all expect a full-length album to come out this year and we anticipated one other single before that following the current summer anthem :) After all, ‘Freedom’ is what we’ve all been after considering so many months of lockdown and social distancing conditions.
The forthcoming album was produced by Gerry Horan with Dowling as co-producer, and mixed by Ger McDonnell (The Cure, U2, Van Morrison, Martha Wainwright, Shane McGowan, Sinead O’Connor), Dowling’s latest output was partially recorded at Crossroads Studio in Kilkenny with support from Ireland’s Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media.
FIFA Records puts a huge focus on building strong working relationships and partnerships with the artists, working with locally owned businesses to ensure it sustains a vibrant infrastructure in a web of economic and social relationships. The aim is to benefit not only the artists, but to contribute to a sustainable local and national economy.
‘Freedom’ is out now, available everywhere digitally, including Spotify and Apple Music. Fans can expect the release of Cat Dowling’s next long-player later this year. In the meantime, they can download the current single at https://catdowling.bandcamp.com/track/freedom. Apart from supporting the artist directly, this will allow you to get an immediate notification of the album’s release date once it arrives.
