We had the fortune this week of discovering one of the blossoming bands of South America, a region whose musical output we have previously explored in this feature on Robsongs [The Blog That Celebrates Itself Records], along with the 3 bands included in the groundbreaking compilation REVOLUTION – The Shoegaze Revival [Ear to Ear Records / Gerpfast Kolektif]. Very happy to delve further and find gems.
So who is this mysterious new band that has impressed us? This is Maff, a four-piece explosion of sound born of a tight and intoxicating weave of guitar, electronica and strong grabbing vocals. Band members Richi Gómez, Nek Colombres, Martín Colombres and Talo Correa seamlessly create a deserving soundtrack.
The band is about to launch their debut Maff EP on July 6, both digitally and on limited edition CD, which we had the privilege of listening to. Today we bring you the premiere of one of the songs from this album – Walking on Fire, a powerhouse track that first peaked our interest in this quartet.
The full-length runs 4 minutes 57 seconds, but the band managed to hook up with Ummagma, one of the most dynamic dreampop nugaze duos out there today, to create a radio edit.
What else can you expect from their self-titled EP? A feast of audio delights certainly. We won’t go into detail about each track – we’ll save that pleasure for a forthcoming review. Suffice it to say, for now, that Maff is where shoegaze meets grunge, but with wavelengths of beaming positivity. It’s no surprise that they’ve chosen this route when you consider that The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Pixies, Ride, Sonic Youth, and My Bloody Valentine all number among their influences.
We encourage you to fetch this album and support the band directly by ordering either the download or the CD via Bandcamp.
