Swiss multi-cultural collective Sirens of Lesbos just released their delightful version of Simply Red’s ‘90s hit, Fairground, which is available for free download via their SoundCloud.
Sirens of Lesbos enchanted listeners last year with the singles Shotgun and We’ll Be Fine, both of which gained acclaim at respected platforms like BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, Complex, and more.
One of the interesting bits about the band covering this Simply Red song is that they didn’t like it when it originally came out. But 24 years later, with Sirens of Lesbos’ members perhaps mellowing a little, they realized that Fairground was ripe for a re-make.
Their cover winds around with an inviting vibe, filled with click-clacking percussion and drums, a supple bass line undertow, and trippingly light guitar and electro notes. Dual swaying vocals from Jasmina and Nabyla Serag lend a calming and assured tone to the restless instrumentation.
Past the mid-way mark, the song elongates with hazy horns, and then changes sonic shape yet again as it brightens with shimmering syncopation and more emotive vocals.
While everyone in the group is Swiss, they all come from very diverse backgrounds, which shines through via their melting-pot musical style. A few of the members have parents who were political refugees from and/or freedom fighters in their native countries.
Sirens of Lesbos are focusing on building up their live presence and production work and are set for even grander output in the future.
