The Record Stache

Written by: Jen Dan

California-located pop singer-songwriter Ashe has been making big waves over the past few years with her ear-catching and relatable music. She’s captured the attention of audiences and critics alike and has worked with pop and electronic luminaries like Billie Eilish and Louis The Child.

Ashe’s latest record, the reflective Moral of the Story: Chapter 2 EP, closes the book on a compelling narrative journey that tackles the end of a toxic relationship. The EP was produced by high-profile creatives Noah Conrad (BTS, KIIARA, Sasha Sloan) and FINNEAS (Billie Eilish’s bro) and is out now via Mom + Pop Records.

Storytelling final single Not How It’s Supposed To Go is the realization of time wasted in a less-than-ideal relationship and the post-break-up freedom that follows. Based in light piano pop, Ashe’s pirouetting vocals are supported by clacking percussion and a lush diffusion of backing harmonies. She delivers her poignant lyrics as the protagonist of the tale, revealing thankfully that, “I took my life back.”

Ashe gives details on the personal origins of the song, divulging, “When you’re in a toxic relationship with someone, you often don’t realize it until you get out. And hopefully, you get out. It’s when you leave that you figure out how fucked up it really was… I didn’t write this song to dismantle the idea of marriage, I wrote it to dismantle the marriage I was in… There’s such a better life on the other side…”
