Just 10 months after their latest On The Outside EP, Philadelphia’s indie alternative duo Tulipomania published their new Off The Map/On The Outside (Spinello Remix) EP on July 27 via Sursumcorda Records. Loyal to their trademark custom, Tulipomania wrote a brand new single which they offer with a remix of their previous one, plus one more instrumental remix of it, this time presented by London-based electronic producer Spinello. Tulipomania is an edgy indie to alternative dark rock moniker who’s not afraid (actually they are looking for it) to blend their already indie songs with targeted electronic data, trying to push their arrangements forward to more alternative streams, and they do in a quite sensational way. This time band members Tom Murray (lead vocals, bass, drums) and Cheryl Gelover (synths, backing vocals) were joined by Mitch Smith on guitar and glockenspiel, who also contributed to their first eponymous album. It was recorded by Richard Hartline while the final mix was produced by Mark Plati, famed for his work with The Cure, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Philip Glass. The sonic result, as you understand, is a top-class work which specially dressed Tulipomania’s performance in the studio.
Off The Map is an essential specimen of their musical likes and their performing skills. It swings from indie rock to slight industrial soundscapes where the band successfully placed their dark rock-oriented harmonies, offering a glorious mid to down-tempo song. I can easily imagine it in a film soundtrack in the species of Tim Burton, a little spooky, tricky in its arrangement, and loaded with emotions which somehow derive from the band’s vocal “narrative”. The video for On The Outside has been chosen as an official selection at the BAFTA qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival in New York. The videos created by Tulipomania have been featured in many film festivals worldwide (London Short Film Festival, Leeds International Film Festival, Encounters-Bristol, Zubroffka-Poland, Stop Trik-Croatia/Poland, Brooklyn Film Festival, Animation Block Party-USA etc.).
The remix by Spinello on the last year’s On The Outside takes the song to more experimental platforms. Spinello mostly uses a more minimal approach to the song experimenting with reduction and depletion, filters, on/offs, that all open the gates to a new prospect, a very interesting touch by the remixer. He somehow found the inner groove of that song that he emphasized, and together with all his unique techniques, the song touches a more spoken-word electronica makeover, a brilliance! The second instrumental remix of the song included in this release is a way more abstract experimental electronica, and it actually works as an alternative “study” on the song.
