The mysteriously alluring pop artist who goes by the moniker Luna Shadows is an LA-based, singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer who has DIY crafted tracks that evoke the bittersweet side of life in the City of Angels. She recently released her dreamy debut EP titled Summertime.
Luna Shadows’ latest single, Hallelujah California, is steeped in a romantic melancholy that informs all of her music, whether in the sonics or the lyrics. Luna Shadows calls the Echo Park section of LA home and like Lana Del Rey, she radiates a nostalgic longing through her light, languid vocals and evocation of the landscape and vibe of the darker side of life in the sunshine.
This is especially true of Hallelujah California, and ode to and lament of the California dream. Luna Shadows’ wistfully sweet vocals ride over waves of soft, but pulsing synths, sparkling electronic notes, and a crisply snapping rhythm.
On the video for Hallelujah California, Luna Shadows unveils the grayscale flipside of the bright and shiny aura of the Golden State. Prismatic footage of palm trees swaying in the smoggy breeze and roadsides cluttered with storefronts are intercut with pristine shots of Luna Shadows. She holds a bunch of cut, dried-up flowers and flips through a book to the image of a palm tree, sighing regretfully about soaking up “…vitamin D ‘til we bleed.” and the “boulevard of broken dreams.”, mourning the slow demise of paradise.
