It’s been since 2014 that fans of Dalton Deschain & The Traveling Show have been waiting for their next material to be released. Primarily known for being a live band with cult followings in their home regions of New York City and Detroit, they’ve finally got some new music offerings lined up, the first of which we are thrilled to introduce you to today.
Freakshow is the first single from their impending Roberta EP and if this first track is any indication what the rest of the release is like, we’re very keen to hear more. Much immersed in the folk-tale storytelling tradition popular among folk artists, through this first single, this antifolk punk-cabaret outfit brings us into the strange exotic world of a transwoman living in the 1940s, who finds love with a stagehand for a traveling sideshow.
The Roberta EP as a whole apparently entails a horror-punk-antifolk saga about demon possession, circuses, and nuclear warfare. It will be self-released on October 28.
Freakshow successfully blends several sub-genres of music with a raucous vibe and warped themes. I’d be lying if I said that Amanda Palmer didn’t come to mind, as well as some of the more upbeat offerings of Quebec / Canadian artist Jean Le Loup. This is infectious high-energy music, capable of boosting your blood pressure and exploring themes that are simply unparalleled.
Dalton Deschain & The Traveling Show release the Roberta EP via Bandcamp on October 28, but anybody who pre-orders will gain immediate access to the single.
For those interested in a piece of art to have and to hold (in their own hands), there will also be a chapbook of stories and illustrations by the David Warpaint, along with a download code, lyrics, and a short story written by Deschain himself.
