Austin, Texas-based EDM/hip-hop producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist Tim Gunter adds another notable credential to his growing list with his darkly sparkling remix of indie pop duo XYLØ’s single “Afterlife”.
Chase and Paige Duddy, the California-residing brother and sister behind XYLØ, have had a dream-like musical trajectory that started with a twist of fate. A couple of years ago, Chase was crafting a composition for the video campaign of Kendall and Kylie Jenner’s PacSun clothing line and asked Paige to give him a vocal assist.
Fans of the Jenner sisters, and the celebs themselves, swooned over the tune and Chase and Paige were asked to create more songs. Popular demand inspired the siblings to form XYLØ and release a string of captivating singles, including “Afterlife” which premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio station and has been streamed over one million times on SoundCloud.
Cue the entry of Gunter, at the request of XYLØ, and his elevated take on “Afterlife”. The beats master isn’t content to just rehash the original words with drops, but adds his unique, song-structure spin to the proceedings. Gunter explains, “…I wanted to keep the integrity of the original but make it a bit more energetic during the drop… The track is super listenable, but still goes off live. I’m excited to start playing it in sets.”
Gunter kicks up the intensity a notch or two on his remix of “Afterlife”, shifting the electro-pop vibe of XYLØ’s original into a deeper and darker, EDM-infused affair. A winding synth line stalks with menace, creating a stark contrast against Paige’s lighter register, emotionally diffused vocals. Scintillating electronic blasts and crescendos of sparkling synth notes shoot through the chorus, charging the remix with crackling electricity.
