The Sweet Five #100

Curated by Stephen

I remember starting this journey for The Record Stache a couple of years ago now. Thinking about what would be a cool idea every week, that’s when The Sweet Five started. I based the whole concept around Frank Ocean’s track The Sweet Life (which of course featured in the first ever edition). It was something that I could contribute week after week, with different types of music for everyone to enjoy. Today marks one hundred editions of The Sweet Five, and I couldn’t be prouder of getting to this milestone.┬áSo I thought I would treat you, with The Sweet Ten today, with ten top songs (in no particular order) from 2014 thus far!

Prides – Messiah

Prides have jumped on the scene from Scotland with this absolute stunning track. Synthpop trio rocking some sweet tunes. I really dig this song, and these guys have huge potential in the industry!

BROODS – Coattails

BROODS are a little secret we are keeping here in NZ. Recently released on the world, BROODS are a brother and sister duo who have a sweet indie pop style. Yes, they share something in common with Lorde, which is producer Joel Little. BROODS are writing their own story, and have recently released their debut album.

Tove Lo – Habits

So Tove Lo is my absolute love affair from this year. Habits is a great song, her voice is powerful – she’s gorgeous. She has the whole package. I instantly downloaded the EP after hearing this song and was not disappointed. Bring on more from Tove Lo.

Modern Baseball – Apartment

Modern Baseball have that grunge high school sound that makes me think back to my high school days. Modern Baseball are labeled as ’emo’ under Wikipedia, but their music is just too complex for that tag. They write short punchy rock songs that get everyone pumped up!

Bleachers – I Wanna Get Better

I first heard of Bleachers because Jack Antonoff,(member of Fun.) as I follow what Fun. do closely, he obviously is a key to Bleachers. When this song comes on, I often stop what I am doing to sing at the top of my lungs, and jump up and down like a lunatic. I WANNA GET BETTER!

Fences featuring Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Arrows

The career of Fences has gone a little under the radar until the release of this song. Now there is an incredible amount of anticipation for his next album. Good friends with Macklemore, this song couldn’t feature anyone else. It’s a beautiful piece of art. This song is bliss and makes me want to get tattoos on my face.

NO (Now known as Black English) – North Star

NO are already one of my all time favourite bands, and when El Prado came out, a piece of my was entirely at peace and could have died then and there after the first listen. After confusion with other bands named ‘NO’ they changed their name to Black English.

Benny Tipene – Lonely

I was lucky enough to interview Kiwi artist Benny Tipene earlier in the year, and he is a genuine nice guy. Third place in X Factor NZ in 2013 – and his career is absolutely flying. Lonely is a stripped down piece of music written with nothing more than love. Embrace the beauty of this track.

Hozier – From Eden

The little I know about Hozier probably makes me like this artist more. From Eden EP was a real gem for me with a band I took a shot on. A lot of awesome in this track.

Vance Joy – Mess Is Mine

If Vance Joy knew all the nice things I say about him, he would probably be quite chuffed. His EP blew my mind, and this track comes from his unreleased debut album. If you haven’t heard of Vance Joy, you’re not doing a good enough job of being a human.

Young Rising Sons – High

Sorry, I couldn’t pick just 10 songs, so I am being a little sneaky and doing a bonus track. This is a helluva catchy tune. Sometimes I don’t even have to be listening to it for it to get stuck in my head. Young Rising Suns are doing just that, rising up in the music world. Keep your sweet ears on these guys.
