At first, “Happy Boy” didn’t sound like the typical Gold Fields style that I’ve come to know and love over the past couple of years. The track begins with a bit of a disco bass groove that I am loving, but isn’t something that I would be expecting to hear from such a tribal pop band. Once the bongos and the signature Gold Fields’ “oooooooooo oh oooooo” came in, I knew I was in for a treat.
“Happy Boy” has deeply layered ambiance that continues to build as the song moves forward. Little details and instruments are progressively introduced that really add an extra sparkle. Yeah, sparkle. Those delicate strings that slowly make their way out of the background are nothing less than fantastic.
The release of Gold Fields’ debut album, Black Sun, is slated for February 26th. It’s one that I’ve been highly anticipating for quite some time. The Australian five piece will also be embarking on a US tour with A Silent Film next week. Expect to see my jealously posted in the next Concerts I Wish I Could Attend.
